KDDI CORPORATION and OKINAWA CELLULAR TELEPHONE COMPANY will terminate the au 3G mobile phone service CDMA 1X WIN at the end of March 2022. [Jump to the applicable section1] Accordingly, mobile phone handset models compatible with CDMA 1X WIN, and those not compatible with the au VoLTE high-quality voice call audio service, will no longer be operable as of the end of March 2022 (see below for a list of au VoLTE non-compatible models).

CDMA 1X WIN service became available in November 2003, while sales of au VoLTE non-compatible phone models began in September 2012. But the number of these users has now diminished amid the increasingly widespread use of the au 4G LTE mobile phone service offering high-speed data transmission capability and the au VoLTE service offering high-quality audio for voice calls. Another reason for discontinuing CDMA 1X WIN service and au VoLTE non-compatible handset use is that it will free up the relevant frequency bandwidth sectors so that we can use their capacity to further ensure our customers future comfort and convenience in using au mobile phone services.

Because of these changes, it will be necessary for customers currently using handset models compatible with CDMA 1X WIN or handsets not compatible with au VoLTE to switch to 4G LTE-compatible handsets. Beginning on Nov. 16, 2018, affected customers will be able to renew their service contracts free of charge when replacing their handsets in order to continue service. Also beginning on Nov. 16, 2018, affected customers switching to an au smartphone model will be provided with "First Smartphone Support service" free of charge, and customers purchasing an au smartphone while simultaneously signing up for the "au Adjust Plan" will be provided with "Mobile Phone --> au Smartphone Discount" and "Kakeho Discount 60" services that make smartphone use more economical.

By providing more convenient communication services, KDDI and OKINAWA CELLULAR are continually working to increase the value our customers experience.

3. Contract-related administrative fees associated with device model changes

    When making the model changes noted in items [1] and [2] below, customers will not be charged any contract-related administrative fees.

4. First Smartphone Support service

  • (1)

    Support details

    • The service includes a 24-hour [Jump to the applicable section11] dedicated customer contact point providing support that ranges from basic smartphone user instructions to assistance in using advanced functionality to put your smartphone to the fullest possible use. Remote Operational Support is also available, in which our communicators are able to operate your smartphone remotely, [Jump to the applicable section12] to show you how to use it.
    • Lessons in smartphone use and other topics are available by phone, enabling customers to benefit from the instructional content they choose in the convenience of their own homes. [Jump to the applicable section13]
    • For first-time smartphone users, a copy of our easy-to-understand printed smartphone manual will be provide free of charge. [Jump to the applicable section14]

    Conditions

    • Any customer with a CDMA 1X WIN service contract [Jump to the applicable section16] who switches from an au Keitai [Jump to the applicable section4] phone to a 4G LTE Smartphone [Jump to the applicable section17] with the purchase of the latter may use the service.
    • Any customer with a 4G LTE service contract who switches from an AQUOS K SHF31 [Jump to the applicable section4] model to a 4G LTE Smartphone [Jump to the applicable section17] with the purchase of the latter may use the service.

    Customers with Prepaid Service contracts who enter into a regular au service contract for an au mobile phone using the same phone number will not be charged contract-related administrative fees when they enroll.

    Also applies to customers who are under contract to use an "au Nano IC Card 04 (au VoLTE)" au IC card, and who are changing device models without purchasing an au mobile phone.

    Does not apply to the LTE Data Prepaid Service.

    Appointments are necessary for use between 10:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. Please make appointments at the customer service contact point. The phone number of the customer service contact point will be given in the instructions on how to change device models.

    Limited to applicable models. Only available with browsing when iPhones are used; fees apply to iPhone data transmission during use.

    Available for use from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

    Submission of an application is necessary. Please call the customer contact point during hours of operation if you would like to apply. Delivery is within four to five days of application.

    Does not apply to cases in which the device model was changed, service was canceled or service was paused due to a purchase made during the support service period, or to cancellation of an LTE NET (¥300) service contract. Following the support service period, support will be available through sources including the KDDI Customer Support Center (TEL157), as well as the au Smart Support paid subscription support service.
