KDDI CORPORATION (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo/President: Takashi Tanaka, hereinafter simply referred to as KDDI), together with Ossia, Inc. (Headquarters: Washington, US/CEO: Hatem Zeine, hereinafter simply referred to as Ossia), conducted a joint development of a wireless power charging system in aiming for practical realization of "Cota," a wireless power charging technology that enables the simultaneous charging of multiple devices at home or in an office.
As a result of such joint development, we will be presenting a demonstration of wirelessly charging power to smartphones and IoT devices from a distance through a charging device that employs the technology of Cota. This presentation will be held at "CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2016" which will be held in Las Vegas in the US from January 6, 2016 through January 9, 2016.
The Cota Technology makes it possible to wirelessly deliver power not only to conventional mobile devices but also wearable/IoT devices which are rapidly becoming popular. The setup consists of a charger (for transmitting electrical power) and a receiver (for receiving the electrical power) operating on frequencies in the 2.4 GHz band, which is the same as that used for Wi-Fi, and is capable of simultaneously charging multiple devices within its range of transmission. We are expecting that this will be used at home, public facilities such as schools and companies, and even in medical institutions.
At CES 2016, within Ossia's booth, we will exhibit a demonstration of wirelessly charging battery cases of smartphones and batteries within IoT devices, etc. upon authentication using the "au ID," which is an ID unique to smartphones, and a specially designed app.
The representatives of the two companies involved with the development of this development have made the following comments:
"As the popularization of IoT has created opportunities for delivering power to a variety of compact devices, we conduct joint development with Ossia as a promising startup company with whom we can expect global development of business. From now, through this alliance with such an innovative partner, KDDI hopes to promote Open Innovation and create new businesses."
"Ossia is proud to bring before your eyes a Cota technology-employing charging device for IoT in the form of an revolutionary demonstration. The concept of this charging system developed in joint with KDDI will serve as a case study showcasing the possibilities of wireless power supply which will be expanding further."
In anticipation of the future of the IoT era which is yet to come, KDDI and Ossia plan to move forward with development for the practical realization of Cota in Japan. As Ossia considers expanding into Japan, we look forward to KDDI's continued support of Ossia's technology as a key standard infrastructure for delivering power to a variety of IoT devices.
