KDDIは2025年10月6日、環境課題に取り組むスタートアップ企業への支援を行うKDDI Green Partners Fundを通じて、スウェーデンのスタートアップ企業Blykalla AB（所在地：スウェーデン ストックホルム、CEO：Jacob Stedman、以下 Blykalla）に対し、新たに出資（以下 本出資）したことをお知らせします。
Blykallaは、鉛を冷却材として用いる小型モジュール炉（SMR：Small Modular Reactor）の実用化に向けた技術開発に取り組む企業であり、融点の高さと化学的安定性に優れる鉛冷却方式（
注）により、安全性と経済性を両立した原子炉の実現を目指しています。
近年、生成AIやデジタル化の進展により、データセンターにおける電力需要は急速に拡大しています。一方で、再生可能エネルギーは天候などによる出力変動が避けられず、安定的かつCO2を排出しないベースロード電源の確保が、脱炭素社会の実現に向けた重要な課題となっています。Blykallaの鉛冷却SMRは、カーボンフリーな電力供給手段の一つとして、将来的にその一翼を担う可能性を有しています。高い安全性や効率的なエネルギー利用に加え、小型化・量産化によるスケーラビリティを備えており、今後の技術検証や制度整備、社会的受容度の進展とともに、段階的な実装が期待されています。
KDDIは、今後の電力需要構造の変化や、データセンターをはじめとする次世代通信インフラに必要なエネルギー供給の選択肢を広げる観点から、本出資を通じてBlykallaとの情報連携や欧州を中心とした協業の可能性を検討してまいります。
今後もKDDIは、次世代の脱炭素技術に関する多様なアプローチを尊重し、脱炭素社会の実現とグローバルな環境課題の解決に貢献してまいります。

Investment in Blykalla, Developer of Lead-Cooled Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Technology
On October 6, 2025, KDDI announced a new investment ("the Investment") in Blykalla AB (Headquarters: Stockholm, Sweden; CEO: Jacob Stedman; hereafter "Blykalla"), a Swedish startup, through the KDDI Green Partners Fund, which supports startups addressing environmental challenges.
Blykalla is engaged in the development of technology for small modular reactors (SMRs) that use lead as a coolant. The company aims to realize reactors that combine safety and economic efficiency through the lead-cooled reactor concept [1], which offers a high melting point and chemical stability.
With the rapid expansion of electricity demand in data centers driven by advances in generative AI and digitalization, securing stable, CO2 emission-free baseload power sources has become a critical issue for achieving a decarbonized society, as renewable energy output fluctuates due to weather and other factors. Blykalla's lead-cooled SMR has the potential to become a key carbon-free power option for the future. In addition to high safety and efficient energy use, the technology offers scalability through modularization and serial production. As technical validation and regulatory development progress, phased implementation is anticipated.
Through this investment, KDDI will explore information sharing and potential collaboration with Blykalla, particularly in Europe, to expand energy supply options for next-generation communication infrastructure such as data centers, in response to changing electricity demand structures.
KDDI will continue to respect diverse approaches to next-generation decarbonization technologies and contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society and the resolution of global environmental challenges.
