On October 2, 2013, KDDI and Okinawa Cellular started introducing the next-generation IEEE 802.11ac [1] wireless LAN standard for the au Wi-Fi SPOT public wireless LAN service, which provides comfortable Internet communications to au smartphone users at train stations, airports, cafes, and other locations outside the home. The standard has been introduced at several Doutor Coffee Shop (3 locations) and Excelsior Caffe (2 locations) chain outlets, and will later be expanded to a variety of other locations with high customer demand.

Using this standard, au smartphones that support 11ac can perform high-speed communications at a maximum speed of 433 Mbps [2], enabling users to enjoy more comfortable Internet communications.

11ac is new standard for wireless LAN that is under development by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). Compared to 11n, the conventional standard, further increase in speed has been achieved.

  • [1]
As of September 2013, the IEEE 802.11ac standard is still in the draft stage and is in the process of being finalized.
  • [2]
This service is a best-effort service. Note that the listed speed is not the actual communication speed, but the maximum value based on the technical standards. The actual speed may fall substantially short of the maximum for various reasons including the customer's communication environment and traffic conditions, even within service areas.
  • [3]
This is the maximum value based on the technical standards with 40 MHz bandwidth and 1x1 MIMO.
  • [4]
This is the maximum value based on the technical standards with 80MHz bandwidth and 1x1 MIMO.
